Intercontinental The Barclay, New York

I was glad to have bagged this stay at the old rate of 30k points as it was showing at over $400 a night when I was looking at accommodation in NY. Unfortunately my Royal Ambassador status had run out at the end of May and despite having a referral voucher to regain this status, the process had not worked in time and I therefore was relegated to Ambassador status for this stay. This meant a mediocre room upgrade, no free mini bar and no Club access either.

The room was quite small, despite being told that I had received an upgrade. This hotel is one of the old style classic hotels in the IC range, so I suspect that it was due to the age of the building as to why the rooms are quite small. Nevertheless, the room was nicely furnished and the bed was particularly comfortable. The only one gripe was the level of noise in the room, both from the constantly honking NYC traffic and creaking and cranking water pipes. The room was also quite dark and dingy most of the time, although this was due to the small windows and the high rise buildings surrounding the hotel.
