Day 7 : Thursday 8th December 2004

Previous - Next

Crossing the country ... again!

After two quite hectic days, today was always going to be more relaxed. I had a nice lie in, followed by by breakfast in the hotel restaurant. Then I happened upon a replay of the previous night's UEFA Champions League game between Liverpool making a miraculous escape against Olympiakos (little was I to know that they would later repeat the feat against Milan in the final!). After all this was over, it was time to head to the airport for my flight over to Durban.

BA6311 Cape Town Intl (CPT) - Durban Intl (DUR)

It was a good half hour's drive to my friend's house in Umhlanga, a lovely coastal holiday town just up the coast from Durban. Him and his wife had just had their first baby and it was great to meet them both and see the baby for the first time. We had a short stroll along the promenade and then took a quick dip in the ocean. The beach is protected by shark nets, but the surf was quite large and not being a particularly good swimmer, I was quickly tired by the continually breaking waves, having to dive under each one that had already broken. But it was good to get in the sea, as the weather (and the climate in general) in Durban was very hot and humid. Luckily it wasn't quite as hot as it had been - 39C the week before I arrived!!!

In the evening we cooked a BBQ (or Braai of course!) on the balcony overlooking the beach and sunk a few beers while having a good catch up. I definitely could get used to this style of living!
