Day 4 : Monday 6th December 2004

To the Cape

Today was all about getting over to Cape Town. My friend had taken the morning off work to take me to the airport, but first we dropped in at the very exclusive Westcliffe Hotel to have a rather nice breakfast in their panoramic restaurant. This was very satisfying and the views over Johannesburg were simply stunning.

We then drove to the airport, via some of my friend's personal sites, e.g. his former school, and we arrived at the airport about 2 hours prior to my flight.

I took a taxi into the hotel in Cape Town, the taxi driver was knowledgeable and told me about the various areas of Cape Town and what was worth seeing etc.

I got to the hotel, the Holiday Inn on Strand Street, formerly known as the Cape Sun Intercontinental and checked in. I had a lovely room on the 22nd floor with a view to die for of Table Mountain. One of the best views I've ever had from a hotel room in my life.

My next task was to determine what I was going to do for the next couple of days. There are a whole host of things that you can do in Cape Town and around, but I eventually settled on a tour of the Cape wineries and a trip up Table Mountain followed by a visit to Cape Point (Cape of Good Hope). I booked both of these as tours, the only real alternative was to hire a car and go it alone. Not being familiar with the area, I decided that would be a worse idea and, to be honest, I've always found tours to be a good opportunity to meet people, especially if travelling alone. Furthermore, driving a car and sampling wine are two mutually exclusive options!

I booked these with the concierge and then, with the day dragging on, I managed to get myself up to the hotel gym for a short workout. This is most unusual for me, but I felt quite good after I'd finished!

Dinner was in the hotel restaurant, which I thought I would try out. Unfortunately Cape Town's streets are not safe at night, so visiting a restaurant would mean a taxi ride as I didn't have a car. I really couldn't be bothered with the expense or hassle of this, so I stuck with the hotel, which was OK, but nothing special.
