Day 7 : Friday 11th March 2005

Hunter Valley wine tour

Well, today was totally given over to a spot of oenophilia! We had booked a tour which turned up slightly early at 0750! But we had already been up for an hour, which was quite impressive in itself!

The wine tour consisted of the usual three tastings, at McWilliams, Pepper Tree and Cooper's wineries respectively. Lunch was taken at the first, McWilliams winery, and was excellent, with a great selection of food including Emu samosas (!!), Kangaroo prosciutto (!!!) and a whole lot more. But this tour also contained some extras, namely a visit to an Emu and Kangaroo sanctuary (which made a bizarre, but amusing juxtaposition with the lunch menu ) and some chocolate and cheese tasting (the latter at the Cooper's winery). But perhaps the most bizarre stop-off was to sample some exotically named Dr. Jurd's Jungle Juice!! This turned out to be port, which was a bit of an anti-climax, but there we are!

The day was great, really enjoyable if not that memorable - purely because of the wine, of course . We had an excellent driver, Rob, who told many a tall tale, but was also very down to earth. He was due to shave his head the next day in support of a leukaemia charity, and we had a quick whip round on the bus, which totally spontaneous, but very generous and well received .

Once we returned to the hotel, we had dinner again at Darling harbour and then a few Friday night beers at the Pier 69 bar. But the day's indulgences soon caught up with us and we headed to an early bed, mindful of the need to check out and head to the airport the next morning.
