Day 6 : Thursday 10th March 2005

Previous - Next

More beaches and monuments

We again rose early, but dithered for ages before getting out of our room! We had breakfast at a local coffee shop, before heading out to Bondi beach, which I'd never visited before. We hopped on the CityRail service to Bondi Junction and then it was a case of getting a bus, but the bus station was very busy (must have been the weather - everyone heading to Bondi!). Eventually we got on the 380 bus and it was about a 10 minute ride to the beach.

Before going on to the beach, we decided to take a walk around a few bays that were listed in my Lonely Planet guide. The full walk goes right round to Bronte, but we only walked as far as Tamarama beach, which was technically closed due to dangerous rip tide, but there were still several surfers in the water . But the walk was lovely and afforded some great cliff, ocean and beach views.

We returned and walked the full length of Bondi beach, before my friend went for a cheeky swim. She soon realised that the water was quite powerful however and soon returned to the beach. Lunch was a rather dry and untasty chicken wrap.

We intended to return the way we had come, but realised on boarding that the 380 bus runs all the way into Hyde Park. So we simply sat there and rode all the way back in to town, which took about 30 mins, not that fast, but quicker than I had anticipated.

We paid a visit to the ANZAC monument in Hyde Park, which was a fairly simple, but powerfully evocative memorial to the soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand services who have given their lives for our freedom.

Just a few minutes walk further along the park is the magnificent St Mary's Cathedral, that we had seen from the AMP Tower a couple of days before. We explored inside and found beautiful stained glass windows. Unfortunately all my photos of the inside came out blurred , but I have included the best (or least worst!) one below!

After that, it was a return to the hotel, freshen up and head out for a lovely dinner in Chinatown. Following this, we made a small detour to the Star City Casino, where I demonstrated to my friend how quickly one can lose $50 playing Blackjack . Will I ever learn?!?
